Our Part Together
There is an unseen crisis in our
jails and prisons. For the most part,
prisoners are out of sight and out of mind.
But just last night there was a piece on the news about threats being
made to our judges and judicial system.
The telling comment was that many are losing faith in our judicial
system. To this point most Americans
think, “They broke the law; let them pay.
This doesn’t affect my life.”
Nothing could be further from the truth.
There are more that two million
people in the jails and prisons of America.
In fact, the United States now leads the world in the rate of
incarcerations. The Metropolitan
Detention Center alone has about 50,000 bookings a year, and jails well over
two thousand inmates a day. Our prison
population is growing 15 times faster than the general population. These facilities are so overcrowded that
many states are forced into releasing prisoners early. The FBI estimates that 70% of those released
will be incarcerated again.
The alarming reality is that 98%
of those behind bars will eventually be returned to society. What kind of people will they be? Will they be even more hardened and
criminally inclined than before? Most
will – unless Christians take definite action to intervene. One out of every three American families
will be personally affected by crime this year. How many families in your church will that include?
We have a national crisis with no
easy answers. But there is an
answer. His name is Jesus Christ. He can change the hearts and lives of even
the very worst offenders. The purpose
of Light and Liberty Jail Ministry is to bring His light to those who are in
darkness and to bring His liberty to those who are in bondage.
